Join us to CREATE something new!

Alongside local artists, join us to create something new to capture how we feel about the towns that we call home.

We will be exploring different people's stories of migrating to the town in the last 50 years. We want to bring together as many different experiences of moving to Northampton as possible - whether you were a child moving up from London or whether you came from further afield. We are really keen to celebrate all the life and breadth of the towns’ different cultural heritages and communities.

And you are in charge! What we create is completely up to you. It could be a book, an exhibition, a radio play... you decide! Over 6 weekly sessions, you will not only get to know and explore each other’s histories but you will be able to create something new to capture and celebrate those experiences to share with the rest of the town.

In 2018, we facilitated as session with Dostiyo Asian Women’s Network focussed on South Asian experiences of moving to the town in the last 50 years. This session emphasised how history is recorded from only certain perspectives, whilst other are less represented or even unrepresented. When planning for this year’s activity, we wanted to ensure lots of stories from all different parts of Northampton were included and celebrated by collaborating with a wide range of communities. And what better way to do this that directly with people from the town!

We would love you to join the group with your family’s cultural and migration experiences to share – whether national or international migration to Northampton.

The sessions will be led by Subika Anwar-Khan, an actress (Julie, National Theatre) and writer from Northampton. Subika has facilitated writing and drama based workshops around London and the East Midlands. Her workshops focus on contemporary issues relating to young people and to communities from underrepresented backgrounds. Subika was the Assistant Director for Immune and National Theatre Connections production The Musicians at the Royal & Derngate, led research based workshops with South Asian based charities Hopscoth for her play Divided and Dostiyo for 60 Miles by Road or Rail.

Other recent acting credits include: Mephisto (A Rhapsod) (Gate Theatre) 2019; After Love (BBC Films, BFI & Sundance) Aleem Khan 2019; Eastenders (BBC ) 2019.

Tuesday evenings from 12 May until 23 June, 6.30-8.30pm, at The Deco (Glen Suite).
