Assistant Designer

for Seedling audio installation project

Fee: £1,500 + expenses

Time: 12.5 days to be worked flexibly between 12 April - 26 May 2021

Location: Northampton

About the Project

Seedling is a new audio installation by Helen Crevel focussed on consumerism, (potential) motherhood and environmental responsibility, and how it connects to our geographical and cultural heritage.

This project period includes research and development time before recording and presenting the audio installation in Grosvenor Centre, Northampton (17-23 May 2021). We are supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

The installation will be presented in a structure, designed by Ruth Stringer, which will be built locally and delivered to the shopping centre. The structure design is currently being developed; we think it will be a cosy, dome-like shape with lots of textiles and fabrics covering the skeleton frame. The inside will be a domestic space, with familiar items you’d find at home. It will be easy to construct/deconstruct, to allow for transport in an appropriately-sized vehicle, and easy storage.

About the role

We are looking for an early-career designer to assist Ruth in the design and creation of the installation’s structure.

As the structure will include many textiles and fabrics, it would be ideal for you to have craft, weaving and/or textile skills (including scenic sewing) and access to a sewing machine. We have support from the Royal & Derngate workshop team for the structural elements of the build, and access to their workshop space.

Part of your role will be sourcing local things and materials that can be recycled and reused in our design. This might involve sourcing through social media, local groups and charity shops. It would be beneficial if you have access to your own transport, although not essential.

As environmental responsibility is a key focus for the project, you will be invited to attend two workshops delivered by Staging Change and other opportunities to develop your sustainable practice and ways of working. You do not need to have a track-record of working on projects focussed on the climate crisis or environment but it is important for us to work with someone who is passionate about improving their knowledge on working sustainability and will be actively involved in climate conversations with the team throughout the project. You will also be involved in the overall evaluation of the project and have opportunities to feed into future planning.
