Taste-Safe Sand Activity
Step-by-step guide to making:
Taste-Safe Sand
Messy and Taste-Safe
A great activity for anyone who likes to play in the sandpit, with an added bonus of it being taste-safe. Make different sized sandcastles, write your name in the sand, bury your hands or even make your own beach scene with umbrellas and deckchairs - the possibilities are endless!
What You’ll Need:
Brown sugar (any kind of brown sugar)
Cornflour
Vegetable oil (or another oil e.g. coconut oil)
Spoon and container for mixing
Large tray or plate or sandpit
How to make your Taste-Safe Sand:
Step 1
Set up - get a big container or bowl to mix your sand and your spoon. You might want to lay out a towel just for safety.
Step 2
Add in equal parts of sugar and cornflour and mix - add in your brown sugar and cornflour, in equal parts and mix together using your spoon (or your hands or both).
Step 3
Add in your oil - little by little add in your vegetable oil and mix in each time. You want to add a little at a time so you can keep and eye on the texture of your sand and get a good ‘wet sand’ so you can make sandcastles. If you put too much oil in you can always add in some more sugar and cornflour (I had to do this while filming!).
Step 4
Tip your sand into your tray - once you’ve got a good texture and you’re happy then you can tip your sand into your tray or sandpit. You can add in straws, umbrellas, little beach toys like buckets and space or you can add in some recycled moulds like yoghurt pots or coffee cups to make sandcastles.
Step 5
Explore - explore the sand textures and shapes you can make in the sand - making sandcastles or writing your name in the sand with your finger. You can even bury your fingers or hands or bury some treasure. Press play on our Sensory Sounds Earth song for en even more theatrical experience at home and even sing along!
